Silk Road: Uzbekistan - News and Events

The Great Silk Route, which has been connecting East and West during twenty centuries, restorates its historical importance. It will become a bridge between different cultures and civilizations, which always strives to dialog with each other.

Lots of countries are stringed on silk thread of ancient caravan road, wich has been paved by Rubruk, Marko Polo and which is being assimilated by our contemprories. Azerbaijan was one of the key trade and transport knot on this huge road. And Azerbaijan has not lost its unique geographical situation uniti nowadays.

New and independent states of South Caucasus and Central Asia joined the programme of teachnical assistance to development of the transport corridor Europe-Caucasus-Asia (TRACECA) in the framework of EU in May, 1993 on the Conference in Brussels.

The connecting of the railway roads of Iran and Central Asia in the place of Serakhs became an important step on the way of realisation of the great project. And in the same time (on 13 may, 1996) on the new railway station in Serakhs Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan signed the treatment about providing of each other by the regime of free transit. Since that time the most important part of the former caravan road from Japan to Adriatic Sea has begun to be being restorated in modernized "railway" form. Republics, which have become pioneers on new old road", have received huge profits: Uzbekistan, for example, on the realization of this treatment used sparingly 12 millions dollars on the transportation of cotton, Georgia gets profit in 9 millions yearly (this year in port of Poti the work up of containers will reach 55 thousand conventional figures. To the railway road connecting Georgia and Azerbaijan joined also Sea way which delivers Kazakhstanian Oil by tankers from port Aktay to Baku, where it is been reloaded into cisterns. By the help of this joined transport corridor is transportated tens of thousand of oil to Europe.

The cooperation between Azerbaijan and Japan was discussed in details during the official visit of the President of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev to Japan (from 24 to 28 febmary 1998) with the purpose of restoration of life creating forceof Great Silk Way and involve countries of this area to the dinamic process of integration and cooperation. The number of participants of the favourable transport-transit union by the route "TRACECA" permanently increases, and number of countries which shown their desire to join this project also increases. That is why, the President of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev suggested to held in September the summit of the heads of countries, troughout which territories The Great Silk Route, used to lay.

Representatives of 30 states and 12 international organizations will come to Baku on 7-8 September. The work of summit will be reflected by the 200 journalists. The leaders of Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Ukraine and the prime -minister of Armenia will sign the agreement on the development of transport corridor Europe-Caucasus-Asia. This document will create additional legal base for the "TRACECA" programme and will be powerfull stimulation for the establishment of new economical centres in the euro-asian area and creation of conditions for the fruitfull cooperation between eastern and western countries.
