Silk Road: Uzbekistan - News and Events
With the dynamic developmentof the South-East Asia and China economies there is a necessity to provide for new - faster and more efficient cargo delivery routes to Europe. Possible development prospectives were also outlined by Zhang Zhijian, China ambassador in Finland, in his public presentations reminding about the historical link between China and Europe by the famous Silk Road.
Today thanks to the efforts of several countries and companies operating between Europe and Asia we see the revival of an iron Silk Road. It is of great importance to strengthen political, economical, technical, scientific and cultural cooperation between the two continents. Development of a new transport corridor is first of all aimed at connecting the industrial regions of China with European retail markets. Meanwhile, economical need for railway development allows to introduce changes in the current transport services market, where cargo shipment between Europe and Asia is mainly provided by seaborne transport.
Demand for transport solutions alternative to marine traffic arose from extensive formation of cargo flows, active development of Ugursky Territory (North-West region of China), as well as necessity to reduce transport costs and goods delivery terms. To meet this demand a project was initiated to open a direct railway container transportation route from China to Ukraine and further to the West European countries.
The project was initiated under the aegis of Ministry of Transport of Ukraine in cooperation with representatives of China business circles and Ukrainian State Center of Transport Service (USCTS) Liski. In November 2003 the question was brought to discussion for representatives of railway administrations of eight countries - China, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Poland, Hungary, Check Republic and Slovakia. The parties discussed the project, worked out a journey schedule and tariff policy of the new container train.
