ANKARA - Turkey will initiate construction of 76-kilometer part of Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway project which is known as "Iron Silk Road". Turkey's Transportation Minister Binali Yildirim told AA on Monday that the construction of the part on Turkish soil would start in the end of May or beginning of June. Yildirim said that the tender for the project had been held in September 2007, and Celikler-Ozgun construction group won the tender for nearly 290 million YTL. He said that the project, which had a strategic and economic importance for Turkey, would be completed in three years. Turkey has reserved 380 million YTL for construction of its own part in the project which will turn historical Silk Road into "Iron Silk Road". Georgia will construct the 29-kilometer part from Turkish border to Ahilkelek and also rehabilitate the existing railway from Ahilkelek to Tbilisi. Ground-breaking ceremony of Georgia's part was held on November 21st, 2007. The whole project is targeted to be completed by 2010. Also when Marmaray Project (Marmaray Rail Tube Tunnel and Commuter Rail Mass Transit System) in Istanbul Strait is completed besides Baku-Tbilisi-Kars Railway Project, it will be possible to transport freight by railway from Europe to China without interruption. Thus, all freight transportation between Europe and Central Asia will be made by railway. (1 USD = 1.29 YTL)
