The International scientific theoretical conference "The Great Silk Road. Culture and Traditions. The past and the present." was held in Ikuo Hirayama International Caravanserai of Culture.

The purpose of this imposing forum is to contribute to the research of various aspects of the Great Silk Road, to promote international scientific cooperation and integration of the scientists from different countries who conduct study of the Silk Road historical and cultural heritage, as well as to stimulate world public attention to the revival of the ancient thoroughfare. Historians, archeologists, political scientists, art experts, architects, restorers from Central Asian countries, Japan, South Korea, Russia, Australia and other countries took part in this annual conference.

A number of topics were put for discussion, including the following: "The Great Silk Road; history and main stages of development”, "The role of culture in historical, political, social and economic aspects in the Silk Road region”, "Restoration of mural paintings in the historical monuments”, "Topical questions relating to the revival of the Great Silk Road in the 21st century”, "The prospects of research and preservation of the material and spiritual heritage”, "The Silk Road cultural traditions in the modern art of Central Asian peoples”. More than 50 reports were discussed at the conference. These reports were presented by well-known specialists dealing with the issues of the history of the ancient arterial highway, the topical questions of its revival in the 21st century, new trans-national cultural links in the epoch of globalization. All these reports are supposed to be published in special compiled edition within the next few months.

The conference appeared to be an important cultural event of the year and it evoked widespread international response. Once again it testified to the fact that at present time the Great Silk Road is not only the highway to transport goods but also a channel of profound international cooperation and interaction of varied cultural wealth, religious concepts, arts and traditions.

The ancient trans-national road played an important role in the development of human civilization, and today it serves the noble purpose of strengthening of understanding and good-neighbourliness between the people of the globe.
