Bishkek hosted the International Symposium "Historical and communication problems on the Great Silk Road".
More than 30 scholars from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Turkey, spoke about the history, languages, trade, statehood, and communication along the Great Silk Road.
Kyrgyz President Askar Akaev suggested to the world community that the Silk Road traditions should be developed in the light of contemporary economic, political, and cultural relations between East and West.
One of the speakers, Dr.Feza Tansug (Turkey), expressed the leitmotif of the Bishkek Forum: "The Great Silk Road is a global cultural communication produced by economic and historical factors"
The symposium had the honor of numbering among its participants the outstanding Kyrgyz writer and diplomat, Chingiz Aitmatov, who especially arrived from Brussels. Aitmatov was given the title of an Honorary Doctor of the Kyrgyz-Turkish Manas University, on the occasion of his 75th birthday to be celebrated this December.
As part of the symposium, the Kyrgyz National Philharmonic Society held a concert "The Silk Road melodies", representing the music by Kyrgyz, Kazakh, Uzbek, Chinese, Russian and Italian composers.
