Georgian President - Eduard Shevardnadze is a passionate supporter of the development of mutually beneficial relations between various Silk Road countries.
Being Minister for Foreign Affairs of the ex-Soviet Union, Eduard Shevardnadze during the conference on Asiatic-Pacific countries: Dialogue, Peace, Cooperation", held in Vladivostok city (Russia) in September 1990, along with the other problems submitted a question on revival of the historical Silk Road in the context of "new thinking".
In his book "The Great Silk Road", published in Tbilisi in 1999, Eduard Shevardnadze formulates a new vision of the Great Silk Road - Eurasian transport arterial road. According to Shevardnadze, it is necessary to create unified mutually acceptable political, economic, scientific and technical, humanitarian, cultural area of Eurasia. Today Silk Road area has all chances not only for the "positive co-existence", but also for the "positive partnership co-operation". Countries along the Silk Road "… must create a new legal area, "new economic diplomacy", "new architecture" of Eurasia in response and regardless of modern theories of "civilizations clash" -Edvard Shevardnadze writes in his book.
Edvard Shevardnadze has put forward an idea in this book on the creation within the area of the Silk Road a general market of the Caucasus and Eurasia.
